Apparent Boating Accident Results in Death Off Bokeelia

A single vessel boating accident occured In North Pine Island Sound near North Captiva, around 10:15 a.m., Wed. April 3 2019.  Johnny Messer, 32, of Bokeelia fell off the boat that he and two others were riding in while the vessel was moving. Witnesses were unable to revive the victim, who was declared deceased on scene. Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the United States Coast Guard and the FWC all responded to the scene. The incident is under investigation by Florida Fish & Wildlife. More information as it becomes available.

 

Millions in LCEC Equity Retired This Year

LCEC release:
North Fort Myers, FL – April 2, 2019 - The LCEC Board of Trustees recently approved a $14.6 million 2018 equity allocation. In addition, an $11.9 million equity retirement was approved putting those funds back in the pockets of active and inactive electric cooperative members. This amount includes an $8.1 million return of equity to inactive customers with memberships that have been closed since 2011, and an additional return of $3.3 million to current and inactive members. Customers will see credits on their bill, or equity checks soon.

Fatality Near Lolly Rd. & Stringfellow

There was a vehicle and bicycle traffic related fatality near Lolly Rd. & Stringfellow on north Pine Island at approximately 5:15 PM. Mon., March 11,2019. The road was closed while the incident was being investigated by the Lee County Sheriff's Dept.  John Lackey III, in a 2018 Kia Rio was northbound on Stringfellow Rd, south of Lolly Rd.

Open Registration for the Gibbons Memorial Golf Tournament

Date is set for the 3rd annual Michael Gibbons Memorial Golf Tournament. For years Michael organized a golf tournament here on Pine Island at Alden Pines. . Because of Michael’s love of golf we felt a charitable golf tournament in his name would be most fitting. Michael enjoyed meeting new people and serving in his community of Matlacha and Pine Island.

LCEC Upgrades

Lee County Electric Cooperative contract crews from Pike and are working to change out copper wire to aluminum wire on the power lines.

Semi Truck Disrupts Power in Bokeelia

On 11-26-18, at approx. 2 pm, and at end of Barrancus Ave. off Stringfellow Rd. in Bokeelia, a semi-tractor-trailer caused a power line to break and fall while attempting to turn into the Mango Factory driveway disrupting power to residents nearby. Lee County Co-op restored power within an hour. Pine-Island/Matlacha Fire Dept. and the Lee County Sheriffs Dept. were on site to keep the public away from the temporarily live wire.

No Decision at Oct. LCMCD Meeting

There was no in-depth discussion by the Lee County Mosquito & Hyacinth Control Districts board members about the Woodstock Airport purchase at the October meeting, other than the District’s attorneys are investigating the questions brought forward to the board about easements on the property. The next scheduled board meeting is Thursday, November 15th at 10 a.m.

Recently a memo was distributed to members of the Greater Pine Island Civic Association that provided misleading and, in some cases, blatantly false statements and accusations against the Lee County Mosquito Control District (LCMCD).
