June Fishing in Pine Island Sound

I moved to Pine Island over eight years ago, learned the hard way to fish like all of the newcomers.    I was born and raised in Orlando and a life-long Bass fisherman from the age of two.     Like most Floridians that knew about Sanibel and Captiva Islands. We had a time-share at the then, South Seas Plantation. A dear friend of My Father was Cliff Freeman.     He almost bought Jensen's Marina, if My family would run the place and Cliff would have a place to get away from Orlando politics and relax with friends and neighbors from a small town named Ocoee.      This small speck of a town was just West of Orlando in the middle of the citrus groves.     Starke Lake was in the middle of the town and I would ride My bicycle to the lake every chance I got and fished.     Mr Freeman lived on a small lake just behind it and was neighbors with the West Citrus family.     I spent the first twelve years of My life in this wonderful town.     I actually got to see the first Culprit Fishing rubber worm cast.    I remember when they perfected the dual injection mold.     For years I had batches of worms in five gallon buckets at my disposal.    Culprit started in Ocoee Florida.     It seems fishing was My destiny.

We all went to school together, went to each others churches, socialized with everybody and knew somebody in the town was going to be able to help You if You needed it.     The deal never went through, but I almost grew up in this area.     Knowing the history back then it was probably for the best.     Vacationing here was the Best !!     I would get out of the car with a fishing pole in My hand and come to the condo later.     Usually empty handed because I was a Bass fisherman and couldn't quite figure out the tides had everything to do with when You were going to catch a fish.     It seemed catfish bit all the time.
Ten years ago I left Orlando after being involved in the communications trade. Kids today have no idea how things were.     I watched the progression from Analog, to Electronic, Digital, Fiber, and wireless happen before my very eyes and participated in many upgrades throughout the state.     I wound up at Disney replacing their entire communications system and then turning around and installing a Wide Area Network, property wide to every single Disney facility You could imagine.     The Internet feed actually came from Maitland through a Dual Fiber Ring feeding Orlando and into Disney property.     Anyway I met My wife Jennifer Jennings and commuted twice a week from Orlando to here until we caught up to new construction and I finally came home.    The past ten years on Pine Island have been the best years of My life!     Jennifer brought me down here at night and this was before Charley so all I'm seeing is Australian Pines and Maleleuchas,  wondering all the while what have I got myself into.     I read an article over thirty years ago about Pine Island Chiggers and that's all I knew of this place.     I didn't even know where it was.     Needless to say I didn't sleep very well that night and the next morning Jennifer got Me in the car and brought Me towards Bokeelia.     Bear in mind all I'm seein' is palm trees and Australian Pines and maleleuchas.     We finally come over the bridge at Four Winds and the View of Charlotte Harbor began to come into view.     My eyes began to widen and I looked at Jennifer and asked her   "Is that water??"   She proclaimed   " I told You I live on an Island You ............!!! As we rounded the corner I could see Boca Grande and I knew exactly where I was. Needless to say The decision to stay was easy.    Since then I invented and patented a fishing pole for Snook and have become as proficient at landing Snook as I was with Largemouth Bass.     I get to write articles like this one, give snook fishing seminars at Bass Pro, live in Paradise and know Pine Island is a special place in this Florida Natives heart.    Enough history, let's talk fishing in June We had a terrible Winter and our Snook population took a hit but the Tarpon are all over the place.     Most of the serious fish have moved out of the Backwaters and are running around the interior islands and along the shorelines and Mangrove edges around the Beaches and Cayo Costa.     I fished Estero Bay three weeks ago and there were Reds all over the place.     That's totally different fishing than Charlotte Harbor because You are so much closer to the beach.     If You get out early enough You can spot the Tarpon rolling and I usually free-line a live shrimp around them and wait for the action.    I am and will continue praying for our Brothers North of Us and REALLY hope we don't get hit too.     This is an epic situation and for those of us that are  "awake"  It comes as no surprise.     I hope this is the death nail for the oil industry in America !!! We will see residual residue that escapes the Loop current but I fear the larger long term impact on the Gulf as a whole.     I am willing to bet Mother Nature is a little disturbed right now and Hell hath no fury like the wrath of a Woman.     I won't blame Her.     I will be Emcee for the Mango Mania this year and look forward to seeing everyone again.     Love and Light to All, get out there and fish and soak up some of this Famous Florida Sun while We have it to ourselves and the waters are still fishable.
