Pine Island Fishing Is Awesome In July

Last month I went paddling out to East Part Island in Pine Island Sound with my daughters boyfriends for some camping, shark fishing and Star-gazing.     The phosphorescence  in the water was so thick it was like paddling through blue clouds.     The microscopic animals would lite up as the paddles and boats slipped through the water.    When we arrived at the island and set up camp for the night.    I broke out the off-shore rods for sharks and proceeded to the dock with a cast-net to get some mullet for bait.     When we arrived at the dock, you could see fish of all shapes and sizes moving in the water as it lit up when they moved through it.      No sooner did we look down and we could see the silhouette of a shark that would have gone 200 pounds,   cruising in the area.      He looked like and apparition as the phosphorescent creatures in the water rolled over his body like the lines of a jet fighter ripping the sky open except he was moving in a ghostly manner.      Each time the shark struck at a fish, the whole area around him would lite up then settle down again to the ghostly roils across his fins and tail as it slowly swished the water.       "Ghost Shark" We managed to get him to bite three times and each time we tried to set the hook,   we realized our " Shark" hooks were too small to hook him.     Hearing the drag change tones from free spool to lock down with the clicker on are two sounds I love to hear.
Especially when I am not the one holding the rod.     My daughters boyfriend Franky,   holding the rod.     Had the same look on his face as the rest of us when I locked the lever.     Oh My God!!! He's Huge!!      The eight foot pole doubled over and all we could do was wait for him to turn.
The spool continued to scream and the drag was heating up during his 150 yard run before he turned and threw the hook !!     We played this game with him two more times before he decided he was done toying with us.     We went back to the camp-fire and talked about the Calusa Indians who used to live on East Part island.     This island was discovered by Frank Cushing during the 1800s and was "engineered" in a way that it has a safety lagoon behind it and water canals and aqua-culture ponds on the South end of the island.      The Calusa would trap fish of all sorts as the tide went out and collect them in baskets.     As the night went on we saw several satellites and kept our eyes open for the flying triangles to no avail.     There are several planets that you can see from Sunset through Sunrise, if You stay up long enough. Right now you can see Venus.     Mars, Saturn and Jupiter if You know where to look.     Night-time paddling is one of the most exciting and serene experiences you can have on the water.     Yes it is safe as long as you stay in the boat but you never know what may be following you or what you are going to paddle over the top of.     Hence, the excitement !!!     Serene because You are usually the only ones out there.     If You would like to go on a Night-Time or Day-time excursion with Us.      We offer guided fishing tours,   History and Eco tours and camping from Pine Island Sound.     The fishing is AWESOME don't wait.
Love & Light.
