Coast Connection: Owner Scott Player has applied for a special exception to allow beer and wine sales as well as a setback variance at this facility, which is a marina and emerging entertainment complex at the end of Porto Bello Street in Bokeelia. Some neighbors object, but numerous customers of the facility support the application.
The Pine Island/Matlacha Fire Department has submitted an application for a special exception and variances to allow construction of this facility on Pine Island Road between Pompano and Scallop Streets. The hearing will be on 9 June.
Lee County has released a conceptual site plan for improvements to the northernmost section of the Galt Preserve in St James City. The northernmost section includes a portion of Indian Lake and some awesome native uplands and wetlands.
The applicant for a proposed facility just south of Boat Lift US on Stringfellow Road has resubmitted elevations (drawings) showing the proposed design. There are still questions as to whether the proposal meets the required Pine Island commercial design standards of Old Florida or Cracker style buildings, and a public meeting to review the application has been set for 6 p.m.
The Matlacha Hookers are hosting a Dinner Dance at the Elks Lodge #2781 on Saturday, June 26 to benefit the Beacon of Hope’s Senior Services. The doors will open at 4:00pm and dinner will be served from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Dancing will be from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm featuring one of Pine Island favorites, The Bombaleros.
The Matlacha Hookers are joining efforts with the Beacon of Hope to reach out to Senior Citizens needing assistance in our community. This event represents the first in the Matlacha Hookers ‘Hooked on Seniors’ series of events.
On May 18th the Matlacha Community Center hosted the first Youth Meeting. In attendance were 12 young people, 6 parents, 2 residents with grown kids and 3 county employees plus Tonya Player the organizer of this session.

The Kiwanis Club of Greater Pine Island is very pleased to announce they have awarded 18 local, Outstanding and Academics Scholarships for 2010. These students were all first time applicants and the Kiwanis Club was very happy to award each of them $900 to help pay for their education.
